how to become a police officer in NYS

Table of Contents

3 Red Flags That will Likely Cause an
Agency to Stop Recruiting You

No (or poor) references

Listing Poor or non-existent reference checks suggest that a police recruit is unable to build rapport with co-workers, succeed in their assigned role, or positively contribute to their former employer.

Job hopping

Any employer will tell you that a string of short term employments on your work history is a big turnoff. If you have one or two short-term jobs, that's normal. But if most of them are less than (6) months, sirens start going off

Alcohol & Drugs Photos

Posting pictures of yourself getting drunk and using drugs on social media is one way to get eliminated from the hiring process. Agencies are looking for recruits with good characters, and posting tasteless photos aren't a good sign.

NYS POLICE ACADEMY REQUIREMENTS

The New York police training academy for future police officers is one of the toughest in the entire country. If you survive the police academy in New York, especially the NY law enforcement academy, you’ll be ready for just about anything.

Police officers in New York are probably some of the best trained cops in the nation. Rightly so, since they encounter far more life threatening situations than the average officer.
In order to enroll in the police academy in N.Y. there are some general requirements you must meet first and foremost.

The police officer academy in New York doesn’t allow just anyone to enroll. In fact, if you have any felony convictions, are out of shape, or have poor communication skills, you won’t do well.

Below are some general requirements and qualifications one must meet in order to successfully enroll in the New York law enforcement training academy.

New York Police Academy Requirements and Officer Qualifications:

  • Must be at least age 20 on the Application Deadline and be 21 at time of appointment.
  • Must not have turned 30 before the Application Deadline. The age limitation may be extended up to six years for active military service.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States on or before the Application Deadline.
  • Must have a high school diploma at time of application.
  • Must have good moral character. A Felony conviction is an automatic disqualification.

AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT (After passing the exam and being offered a position):
You must posses a:

  • Graduate certificate from senior high school
  • New York State High School Equivalency Diploma
  • Military GED Certificate
  • High School Equivalency diploma from another state converted to a NYS High School Equivalency Diploma
  • Must have completed 60 college credit hours at an accredited college or university at time of appointment.

Exceptions: 30 college credits may be waived, if the candidate has either:

Received an Honorable Discharge from the United States military after two years of active military service

-or-

Successfully completed a Certified Police Officer Training Course approved by, or equivalent to a course approved by, the New York State Municipal Police Training council. A certified Peace Officer Training course does not qualify.

  • Must be a New York State resident and have a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment.
  • Must be able to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT): sit-ups, push-ups and a one-and-one-half mile run.
  • Must conform to height and weight standards at time of appointment.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts any day of the week, including holidays.
  • Vision Requirement: uncorrected – no worse than 20/100 in each eye able to be corrected to 20/20 in each eye. Correction may be achieved using glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Color blindness is disqualifying.
  • Must comply with New York State Police policy which requires all members to present a neat and professional appearance at all times. Tattoos, brands, body piercings and other body art shall not be visible while a member is in uniform or other business attire. The uniform includes a short sleeve shirt open at the front of the neck. In addition to visibility, some tattoos or brands may have symbolic meanings that are inconsistent with the values of the New York State Police.

Those are just some of the requirements needed to enroll in the New York police academy. If you want further information regarding qualifications, please call the the approved institutions near you. I’ve listed a few police academy locations below for your convenience.

Firearms Training and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course

Firearms Training and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) involve classroom and off-site training. Recruits must show proficiency in both these areas to graduate.

Examination Format and Study Guide

Exam Administration

The first step in the selection process for a position as a NYS Trooper is the competitive written exam.

Several examination dates will be scheduled in each troop area, based upon the applicant flow. Candidates should submit the application as soon as possible.

About two weeks prior to a scheduled exam, candidates who have applications on file will be notified to appear for the exam at a designated center.

Candidates should arrive at the exam site prepared to take the exam and bring with them the exam notice, appropriate identification and two number 2 pencils.

Exam Format and Content

The written examination consists of three components:

  • Written Ability Test: 75 multiple-choice questions designed to test a series of abilities, such as memory, visualization and reasoning.
  • Work Styles Questionnaire: 224 short, multiple-choice style questions designed to assess a candidate’s motivational, value-related and attitudinal characteristics.
  • Life Experience Survey: 96 multiple-choice questions related to a candidate’s past history and experience.

Candidates’ responses to the three examination components will be scored and will determine candidates’ eligibility to continue on in the selection process for the position of New York State Trooper.

Candidates should plan to spend 5-6 hours at the test site which will involve 4 hours to take the exam and 1 to 2 hours for instructions and administrative procedures.

Exam Preparation

The NYSP offers unique “Candidate Preparation (Study) Guide” in two formats – on line and downloadable. For Guide Contents, see menu at left.

The guide includes substantial information to help candidates prepare to take the examination, such as:

  • An general information and a description of the exam components.
  • Strategies for taking multiple-choice tests and answering the different types of questions that will be on the exam.
  • Practice questions and an explanation of the differences between correct and incorrect answers to those questions.

Tutorials

Voluntary classroom-based tutorial sessions are held in various locations across the State. The sessions cover the information presented in the Study Guide in more detail and include additional practice questions, beyond those contained in the Guide.

The tutorial sessions last about four hours, and are conducted by NYSP personnel who have received specialized tutorial training.

Once the tutorial sites are established, applicants who wish to attend a tutorial will be required to request a seat for one of the scheduled sessions. Several methods to request a seat will available to applicants, one of which will be the ability to make your request on line.

NYS Trooper Computer Crimes Unit

If you have information that the Internet or a computer is being used in any way to victimize a child, please complete the Internet Crimes Against Children Online Report.

The New York State Police Computer Crimes Unit (CCU) was established in February 1992 to assist agencies that lack the technical expertise or resources to manage cases involving evidence stored in computers seized in criminal investigations.

Since then, it has evolved into a unit that bridges the technological gaps that often exist between investigating police officers, district attorneys and experts in the field of computers and related technology.

Servicing the entire law enforcement community, as well as private enterprises and persons victimized by technology crimes, Unit personnel now devote much of their efforts to other emerging areas of technology-based crime and have become heavily involved in investigating:

Consumer and credit card fraud,
Industrial espionage and computer tampering,
Adult and child pornography involving personal computers and the Internet,
Cases involving the use of computers in the furtherance of pedophilia,
Theft of funds through electronic transfers,
Money laundering and
Cellular telephone cloning and theft of services.
This unit’s invaluable, specialized investigative capability is available to assist local law enforcement agencies that lack the technical expertise or resources to manage these complicated cases.

Other areas of investigation

CCU members conduct, and assist other State Police investigators with, active investigations of computer and cellular telephone fraud, unauthorized access, money laundering and other criminal uses of technology.

Training and presentations

The unit also spends a significant portion of its time training State Police and other law enforcement officers in the proper procedures for collecting and securing computer evidence, and in the latest trends in computer and technology crime. They are likewise in great demand for lectures in higher education institutions and at meetings of private sector executives and security specialists.
