Recruit Training:

The Sacramento Police Academy is part of the Office of Administrative Services. Training is essentially broken down into three components: recruit, in-service, and specialized.

Recruits are hired after a lengthy selection process and normally work 7:30 am to 5:00 pm for twenty-three (23) weeks. They receive 26 hours in basic criminal law, 90 hours of firearms training not including chemical agents (P.O.S.T. requires 72 hours including chemical agents), 100 hours of arrest, control, and baton (P.O.S.T. requires 60 hours), 70 hours of physical training (P.O.S.T. requires 40 hours), 21 hours of C.P.R. After Graduation:

Rookie officers are on probation for 18 months while they train/patrol with Field Training Officers (FTO). They ride with one FTO for one month. The rookie officers then ride with another FTO for another month. This process continues until the probationary officers have successfully passed four phases of training. During the fourth phase the probationary officer is solo.

In-service Training:

In-service training, Advanced Officers Training consists of forty (40) hours. Updates in criminal/constitutional law, management, officer survival, administrative issues, arrest procedures, driving, and arrest control and baton are part of the topics covered. A written test is administered at the end of the week which requires a passing score.

Officers must qualify with their firearm quarterly. Officers must pass the physical agility test annually.
