What Can I Do With a criminal Justice or Criminology degree?

Should you or should you not major in criminal justice is one of the most frequently asked questions on this blog. Since I went to college and was able to obtain a bachlor’s degree in criminal justice, I am probably more qualified to answer this questions than most.

There are a lot of things you can do with a degree in criminal justice, but make certain that you are 100% positive that law enforcement is what you want to do for the rest of your life. Because if you decide later that law enforcement is  not for you – that hard earned degree means diddy squat in other industries.

Some of the more notable career options that is associated with a criminal justice degree is as followed:

  • Probation Officer
  • Police Officer
  • Correctional Officer
  • State Police/State Trooper/Highway Patrol
  • FBI, DEA, ATF
  • CIA, Secret Service, US Marshall
  • Air Marshall
  • And more

The above careers are just a few of the many things that you can do with a criminal justice degree. However as I mentioned above make sure that law enforcement is what you want to do for the next 20 years. If you decide later that law enforcement is not for you, it will be tough finding work in other industries segments with a CJ degree.

If you are uncertain I’d suggest majoring in communications or business. The great thing about a business degree is it’s very flexible in terms of using it in other industries including law enforcement.

I’m not trying to discourage you from getting a CJ degree because I have a 4 year degree in criminology. I am just showing you the pro’s and con’s on both sides. Luckily for me, I am in a career that I enjoy so a CJ degree was worth the investment.
