Basic Qualifications
The following are the requirements to become a police officer with the Yonders Police Department:
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must possess a valid New York State Class D Driver’s License
- Must successfully complete all phases of the hiring process to be considered for employment.
- Must be at least 18 years old, and must not have reached your 35th birthday
- Must be legal residents of: Westchester, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland or Bronx County for at least three (3) months immediately preceding the date of the written examination and continuously up to and including the date of appointment.

What are the residency requirements?

PREFERENCE IN APPOINTMENT WILL BE GIVEN TO SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF YONKERS FOR AT LEAST THREE (3) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION AND CONTINUOUSLY UP TO AND INCLUDING THE DATE OF APPOINTMENT.
What are the age requirements?
A candidate must not be less than eighteen (18) years of age and must not have reached their thirty-fifth (35th) birthday as of the date of the written examination. Eligibility for employment begins when a candidate reaches their twentieth (20th) birthday. (Exception may be made for veterans as provided in Section 58(1)(a) of the New York Civil Service Law.)

What are the retirement benefits?
