If you want to become a police detective that investigates crime, then there are some steps you’ll need to complete first. One mandatory step that cannot be overlooked is you must have at least one year of police officer experience.
I know that may sound elementary to some, but I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people say they just want to be a detective straight out of the academy. Ycan’t simply walk in from the policeacademy and be assigned to the detective division. It simply doesn’t work that way.
Here are some of the steps that are mandatory to become a police detective:
1. You must have at least one year of police experience at your respective agency (some department require two years of experience)
2. You must have displayed superior work ethic while on the patrol division
3. You must go through an Oral Board Interview. I recommend looking over Robert Lawrence’s handbook Killer Interview Secrets (seen at the top right corner) before sitting for your interview. 4. You must not have had any negative write-ups during your first year on the force
