TO APPLY for recruitment, applicants MUST meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must possess an AA degree, AS degree, or at least 60 credits from a regionally accredited college/university. The degree must include basic general education course requirements. Prior experience as a Police Officer and/or a BA, BS degree or 120 college credit hours are preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS as set forth by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission(CJSTC).

  • The applicant must be at least 19 years of age.
    AND
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
    AND
  • The Applicant must not have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement and who has not been released or discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
    AND
  • The applicant must have his/her fingerprints on file with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. (The Palm Beach Police Department will forward these prints to the agency.)
    AND
  • The applicant must have passed a medical examination by a licensed physician based on specifications established by the Town.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for employment with the Town of Palm Beach:
The applicant must:

  • Not have been released or discharged under other than honorable conditions from any of the Armed Forces;
  • Have a positive work history free from frequent disciplinary actions, suspensions, terminations, and resignations;
  • Be free from felony convictions, misdemeanors pertaining to moral character, perjury, or false statement;
  • Must never have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
  • Have a good driving record to include no driver’s license suspensions for excessive points or failure to pay a traffic fine within the past five years.
  • Have refrained from EVER using hallucinogenic drugs, marijuana in the past two years, and all other illegal drug use in the past five years.
  • Have been a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application.

PHYSIOLOGICAL PROFILE: Consists of a series of events to assess physical abilities. A further description is available from the Human Resources Department.

SWIMMING SKILLS TEST: A skills test examining basic water survival skills, conducted by Palm Beach Lifeguards.

ORAL REVIEW BOARD INTERVIEW: The interview provides evaluation of employment and educational history, ability to relate well to others, reasoning and problem solving skills in answering situational questions, and communication skills.

VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS: The voice stress analysis will be used to verify information obtained from both the application and the Oral Review Board Interview.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION: Candidates are evaluated on the psychological factors related to successful performance as a police officer.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: An investigation that includes a thorough examination of police records, driving records, credit records, military and employment histories, educational history; and inquiry of persons who know the applicant to evaluate whether the applicant respects the law and rights of others, are dependable and responsible, have demonstrated mature judgement in areas such as use of drugs and intoxicants, are honest and demonstrate integrity, and are a safe driver.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: A thorough medical examination given by the Town of Palm Beach Physician, including an EKG and drug screening.

VACATION:

1 to 4 years of employment – 176 hours
5 to 9 years of employment – 216 hours
10 to 14 years of employment – 232 hours
15 and more years – 256 hours

TOWN RETIREMENT PROGRAM ………10 years of service at age 50 or 20 years of service at any age. Retirement multiplier is 3.25% of final average compensation for each year of service. (20 years of service results in a 65% pension, 25 years of service results in an 81.2% pension). The ICMA (international City Management Association) Retirement Corporation, Voluntary supplemental program.

LONGEVITY PAY ………….After 5 years of service, starting at 2.5 percent of employees annual salary, increasing 0.5 percent for every year of service, up to 10 percent.

OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE ……Educational tuition reimbursement, Annual uniform maintenance allowance, Uniforms and equipment are provided upon employment.
