Kentucky Police Academy Requirements & Police Officer Qualifications

The police training academy in any state is no laughing matter, but it is especially difficult in Kentucky. That’s why if you are out of shape or overweight, you won’t succeed.  In fact, if you are in poor physical conditioning, you should wait to apply since the chance of you making it through graduation is slim. Just like military boot camp, the police training academy will challenge you not only physically, but mentally and academically as well.

The mental and physical challenges are intense at the Kentucky law enforcement training academy. That’s why I recommend studying up on the curriculum course expectations long before you arrive at the academy. You can get a head start on the curriculum, as well as a pre-academy workout program by downloading a police academy study guide.

Here are just some requirements needed to enroll in the Kentucky police academy, as well as qualifications needed to be a police officer in the state of Kentucky:

  • You must be citizen of the United States.
  • Must be of good moral character and in good health.
  • Not less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Possess a valid drivers license against which no more than six (6) driver demerit points have been assessed.  You must submit a copy of a valid drivers license at time of application.
  • At the time of application, possess a minimum of sixty (60) college hours of credit, or an associates degree from an accredited college or university, or be a high school graduate with at least two (2) years of active military duty or two (2) years experience as a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer.

For your convenience I’ve listed some of the state approved law enforcement training centers below. If you want more information regarding the self sponsorship program, tuition, and fitness requirement contact the branch directly.
