The police academy is grueling even for the fittest and smartest recruits. With that being said, you can get a leg up on the competition by preparing yourself before attending the academy.
Below we discuss five things you can start doing right now to prepare for the law enforcement academy.
Some of the five tips will be better to achieve for some than others, but the goal is to do something that will get you in optimum shape and mental focus for the academy.
#1: Workout Like Nobody’s Business
Okay this is a no brainer, working out will be a requirement at the academy. We suggest that potential recruits start some kind of Crossfit exercise routine. Why? Many academies across the country are starting to adopt this way of training incoming recruits.
Not only does crossfit do a good job of getting you into shape, but it will also help develop your cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength at the same time.
#2: Firearm Training
Before going to the police academy, it would be a good idea to visit a local shooting range, or get some professional training on how to handle a handgun. Basic training like handgun safety and sight recognition from a professional will go a long way.
If you’ve never shot a firearm before, we suggest that you wait until you get to the academy for help. Because at this stage, we don’t want you to start scrambling to learn how to shoot if you’ve never done it before. Doing it in a hurry before the academy will lead to bad technique.
#3: Learn to like running
This one is a no brainer. One thing that’s guaranteed at the police academy is running your tail off. To prepare try running around your neighborhood at least 3 times a week for at least 2-3 miles. If you can do more that is a bonus, but at the minimum run 3 times a week.
#4: Time Management
Learn how to manage your time effectively because when you start the academy, you will be pressed for time. Everything you do at the police academy is done in a hurry so make certain that you fall in love with time management.
#5: Eliminate Outside Stressors
Attending a police academy anywhere in the country will be stressful. That’s why it is important to eliminate any potential distractions outside of your time at police academy.
Let your love ones know that you will need their support throughout the law enforcement academy.
Conclusion
The police academy isn’t fun in the sense that you’ll be there goofing off. The police academy is suppose to be tough so make sure that you take these tips to heart.
